Drama Unit Conflict Essay This unit is based on the theme about conflict. Its manly about the conflicts of war and the conflicting relationships between the two most important characters in this unit, Billy and Tommy. To me conflict means not getting along with each other resulting each other being violent to each other, mentally or physically. In this unit I show this when Billy and Tommy have been conscripted to go to war. I show them showing there emotions about each other by using a variety of drama techniques such as: slow motion, being abstract, the use of still images, thought tracking and many more. Lesson 1 I started off by brainstorming all the words I would associate with conflict. These are all the words that I chose: I chose these words because I think that conflict has many effects on a person and some of them are the words that I chose above. I chose these words and made a short piece of mime role-play with my group based on these words. I used slow motion at the start of the mime role-play, because it gives a bigger effect and a good way to use facial expression. Also slow motion helped me concentrate more on conflict as it marked the moment of the scene. (Tommy showing his true side to how he feels about Billy). I also used thought tracking. I think this is the best technique to use when working with the theme, conflict. Because while using thought tracking I felt as if I was with conflict with someone, and I thought of the line I will get you back for this. This line made me think of revenge. I think it links very well with conflict because then I can show the true side of the conflicting emotions that a character feels about another. (Billy and Tommy). In this short piece of mime my facial expressions were of a happy person, because my partner (Ameen) who played Tommy felt that Billy was everything to him. This made me feel happy for him. However when I and my partner used thought tracking, Tommy and Billy felt different about each other and this changed our emotions from love to hatred. By now Tommy and Billy were showing each other there conflicting personalities to each other. They werent the same character as I started off them to be. I had to do a short piece of work, showing four linked still images on Tommy and Billys personalities. In this short piece of work I chose images of both characters, when they were young, what they used to do in the childhood. In this scene I used a varied composition of facial expression. In Image 1, I chose the image of being blood brothers. I chose this image because it shows Billy and Tommys love for each other. I over exaggerated my facial expression because it was a very important moment in there lives. My body language was that I was a shy, because I was playing Billy, who is known to be shy. This is because his dad died in the war. The images that were showed were based on physical, social and mental emotions. As I was playing Billy I had very much to say. This is because I used the idea of thought tracking with my group. I think that this worked really well because thought tracking controls a persons mind and his emotions and also sends the message to the audience in a very strong way. I used the use of slow motion in our piece to link the four images as I marked the moment in each image of the emotion that was being expressed. The words that were most important in our piece were from the first image were Billy and Tommy said Together Forever. This shows the audience that the characters mean a lot to each other and the depthless of their love and friendship. Lesson 2 Turning from a man to a solider. I started off with a still image and discussed how we were going to do the spontaneous improvisation for 1-2 minutes. This is what I showed. My partner for the still image was Ameen. He played the character Tommy and I played Billy. Tommys image was of a figure that was proud and had just won something. His status and body language was high and positive. On the other hand, Billy showed a negative attitude. When he received the news his facial expression showed a man who feared something would happen to him. I dont want to go to the war. I dont want to turn out like my dad! This is the line that I kept on saying with fear. I was scared to go to the war. In the spontaneous improvisation different groups showed different ways/ideas of how Billy and Tommy felt and dealt with being conscripted. The group that I liked and stood out for me were Group 2 (Lola, Jack, Tahir, Christina and Anthony). They used a multitude of techniques which included spontaneous improvisation, facial expression and split screen. They clearly showed how Billy and Tommy felt about conscription and did most of the scene in Unison. This made it very clear to the audience exactly what they were trying to show.

Sir Isaac Newton Thesis Statement: Through his early life experiences and with the knowledge left by his predecessors, Sir Isaac Newton was able to develop calculus, natural forces, and optics. From birth to early childhood, Isaac Newton overcame many personal, social, and mental hardships. It is through these experiences that helped create the person society knows him as in this day and age. The beginning of these obstacles started at birth for Newton. Isaac was born premature on Christmas Day 1642, in the manor house of Woolsthorpe, 7 miles south of Grantham in Lincolnshire. It is said that Because Galileo, . . . had died that year, a significance attaches itself to 1642 (Westfall 1). Though his father had died before Isaac was born, he was given his fathers name. He was born into a farming family that had worked their way slowly up the social ladder. The Newtons were one of the few families to prosper in Lincolnshire (Westfall 1). At the age of three Isaacs life would take a drastic turn. When Isaac was three his mother, Hannah Ayscough, remarried to the Reverend Barnabas Smith (Internet-newtonia). Isaac stayed with his grandparents when his mother went to live with the Reverend in North Witham. His maternal grandmother raised Isaac until he was ten. Isaac was surrounded by many cousins and other family members in the surrounding area though, He formed no bond with any of his numerous relatives that can be traced later in his life (Westfall 11). In 1653 his mother returned after her second husband died. With her she brought one half brother and two half sisters. Although it is not known, bitterness may have inflicted Isaac when his three new siblings arrived. Nev er the less, two years later at the age of twelve he was sent to Grantham to attend grammar school. While attending grammar school Isaac lived with the apothecary Mr. Clark (Westfall 12). Mr. Clark had three stepchildren from the first marriage of his wife, Miss Storer, who were also living in his house. In school and at home Isaac was apparently different and did not get along with any other boys. He was often in fights and remembered only one nice boy from school, Chrichloe. All the other boys seemed to hate him. He was more comfortable in the company of girls. He made doll furniture for Mr. Clarks daughter. From this Isaacs first and last romantic experience developed. Indeed, as the two grew older, something of a romance apparently developed between him and Miss Storer (Westfall 13). From doll furniture Newton moved on to other little machines. He used all the money his mother sent him to buy tools and filled his room with the machines. He fell in love with Mr. Clarks library and would read as often as possible. At times he would spend so much time on projects that he would fal l behind in school. When he realized he was falling behind all Isaac had to do was pick up his textbook and would immediately be caught up. Some scientists have come to admit that according to their findings, they have in fact, proven the Bible to be correct! Evolutionists however, have also had to admit that no one has ever seen any real evolution take place, but still to this day, most won’t admit it to be a misguided theory. Even with the DNA findings that’s been discovered in the past couple of decades, some still don’t want to admit they were wrong. Science has discovered that all in all DNA they’ve ran on different creatures, plants, and even insects, have all a totally different molecular structure. Many animals have become extinct within the few thousand years of written records that we have, yet no new animals have we come to know in that time. Why is that? â€Å"Although evolutionists believe these great evolutionary changes must have taken place over the hundreds of millions of years of supposed earth history, none of these speculations can be proved or even tested. No man was present to observe or record them, so such ideas are entirely outside the scope of real science. Evolution must be believed, not observed. It is a matter of faith, not science.† (Henry M. Morris, 1986) The Bible teaches us that creation was accomplished and completed in the first six days of the week as read in Genesis 1, but evolutionists believe that the process of â€Å"creation†, or better known as the Big Band theory, has been going on for billions of years and is still occurring to the present and that man originated from ape. Morris, 1986, â€Å"Science and Religion† book â€Å"nothing is now being created, just as Genesis says and by the entropy principle, there must have been a creation in the past, just as Genesis says.† There still today, no such process is occurring in fact. Darwin and other scientific evolutionists had taught and believed that man originated from ape. If that be the case, they why isn’t man still in some resemblance of ape today? But the Bible once again states, â€Å"And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.†, Genesis 2:7 There are many consistencies between Science and Bible, for instance consistencies between the Bible and scientific astronomy. With the long studies of astronomy they have discovered that there are millions of stars and some are still unknown to science, yet they are all there. The Bible also refers to stars and the galaxy, which science has also discovered several galaxies, â€Å"As the host of heaven cannot be numbered, nor the sand of the sea measured, so will I multiply the descendents of David My servant, and the Levites who minister to Me†, Jeremiah 33:22. How could have the writers of the Bible known all this long before it had the means of exploring the stars for the galaxies? Therefore, in conclusion, it has become a known fact that many scientists have not only had to change their theories on things, but admitted that the Bible had been correct all along. 8 months later†¦ Ella I despise mirrors. Not because I hate my reflection or that I suffer from Eisoptrophobia. Mirrors see straight through my facade. They know who I used to be; a loud spoken, reckless girl, who showed what she felt to the world. There were no secrets with me. But now secrets define me. If a reflection revealed what was on the outside, I'd be okay. My long auburn hair goes well with my pale complexion. My legs are extensively long and with heels, I'm taller than most of the guys I know. But I'm comfortable with it. It's what's buried deep inside that frightens me because it's broken, like a shattered mirror. I tape one of my old sketches over the mirror on the dorm wall. It's almost completely concealed by drawings and obscures all of my reflection except for my green eyes, which are frosted with infinite pain and secrets. I pull my hair into a messy bun and place my charcoaled pencils into a box on my bed, packing them with my other art supplies. Lila skips into the room with a cheery smile on her face and a drink in her hand. â€Å"Oh my God! Oh my God! I'm so glad it's over.† I pick up a roll of packing tape off the dresser. â€Å"Oh my God! Oh my god!† I joke. â€Å"What are you drinking?† She tips the cup at me and winks. â€Å"Juice, silly. I'm just really excited to be getting a break. All this heat is making me sweat.† She rips some photos off her dresser mirror and throws them into an open box. â€Å"I swear it's like a hundred and ten outside.† â€Å"I think it's actually hotter than that.† I set my school work in the trash, all marked with A's. Back in High School, I used to be a C student. I hadn't really planned on going to college, but life changes – people change. Lila narrows her blue eyes at my mirror. â€Å"You do know that we're not going to have the same dorm when we come back in the fall, so unless you take all your artwork off, it's just going to be thrown out by the next person.† They're just a bunch of doodles; sketches of haunting eyes, black roses entwined by a bed of thorns, my name woven in an intricate pattern. None of them matter except one: a sketch of an old friend, playing his guitar. I peel that one off, careful not to tear the corners. â€Å"I'll leave them for the next person,† I say and add a smile. â€Å"They'll have a predecorated room.† â€Å"I'm sure the next person will actually want to look in the mirror.† She folds up a pink shirt. â€Å"Although, I don't know why you want to cover up the mirror. Lila snatches the drawing from my hands, crinkling the edges a little. â€Å"One day you're going to have to tell me who this gorgeous guy is.† â€Å"He's just some guy I used to know.† I steal the drawing back. â€Å"But we don't talk anymore.† â€Å"What's his name?† She stacks a box next to the door. I place the drawing into the box and seal it with a strip of tape. â€Å"Why?† She shrugs. â€Å"Just wondering.† â€Å"His name is Micha.† It's the first time I've said his name aloud, since I left home. It hurts, like a rock lodged in my throat. â€Å"Micha Scott.† She glances over my shoulder as she piles the rest of her clothes into a box. â€Å"There's a lot of passion in that drawing. I just don't see him as being some guy. Is he like an old boyfriend or something?† I drop my duffel bag, packed with my clothes, next to the door. â€Å"No, we never dated.† She eyes me over with doubt. â€Å"But you came close to dating? Right?† â€Å"No. I told you we were just friends.† But only because I wouldn't let us be anything more. Micha saw too much of me and it scared me too much to let him in all the way. She twists her strawberry blonde hair into a ponytail and fans her face. â€Å"Micha is an interesting name. I think a name really says a lot about a person.† She taps her manicured finger on her chin, thoughtfully. â€Å"I bet he's hot.† â€Å"You make that bet on every guy,† I tease, piling my makeup into a bag. She grins, but there's sadness in her eyes. â€Å"Yeah, you're probably right.† She sighs. â€Å"Will I at least get to see this mysterious Micha – who you've refused to speak about our whole eight months of sharing a dorm together – when I drop you off at your house?† â€Å"I hope not,† I mutter and her face sinks. â€Å"I'm sorry, but Micha and I†¦ we didn't leave on a good note and I haven't talked to him since I left for school in August.† Micha doesn't even know where I am. She heaves an overly stuffed pink duffle bag over her shoulder. â€Å"That sounds like a perfect story for our twelve hour road trip back home.† â€Å"Back home†¦ † My eyes widen at the empty room that's been my home for the last eight months. I'm not ready to go back home and face everyone I bailed on. Especially Micha. He can see through me better than a mirror. â€Å"Are you okay?† Lila asks with concern. My lips bend upward into a stiff smile as I stuff my panicked feeling in a box hidden deep inside my heart. â€Å"I'm great. Let's go.† We head out the door, with the last of our boxes in our hands. I pat my empty pockets, realizing I forgot my phone. â€Å"Hold on. I think I forgot my phone.† Setting my box on the ground, I run back to the room and glance around at the garbage bag, a few empty plastic cups on the bed, and the mirror. â€Å"Where is it?† I check under the bed and in the closet. The soft tune of Pink's â€Å"Funhouse† sings underneath the trash bag – my unknown ID ringtone. I pick up the bag and there is my phone with the screen lit up. I scoop it up and my heart stops. It's not an unknown number, just one that was never programmed into my phone when I switched carriers. â€Å"Micha.† My hands tremble, unable to answer, yet powerless to silence it. â€Å"Aren't you going to answer that?† Lila enters the room, her face twisted in confusion. â€Å"What's up? You look like you just saw a ghost or something.† The phone stops ringing and I tuck it into the back pocket of my shorts. â€Å"We should get going. We have a long trip ahead of us.† Lila salutes me. â€Å"Yes, ma'am.† She links arms with me and we head out to the parking lot. When we reach the car, my phone beeps. Voicemail. I'm on hold with the main office at Indiana University, waiting for answers that probably aren't there. But I have to try – I've been trying ever since the day Ella vanished from my life. The day I promised myself that I'd find her no matter what. â€Å"Are you sure her dad doesn't know where she is?† Ethan flops his head back against the headrest of the office chair. â€Å"I swear that old man knows more than he's letting on.† â€Å"If he does, he's not telling me,† I say. â€Å"Or his trashed mind has misplaced the information.† Ethan swivels the chair around. â€Å"Have you ever considered that maybe she doesn't want to be found?† â€Å"Every single day,† I mutter. â€Å"Which makes me even more determined to find her.† Ethan refocuses his attention to the computer and continues his search through the endless amount of Ella Daniels in the country. She has the same dark green eyes and long auburn hair as Ella. But she has on a dress and there isn't any heavy black liner around her eyes. She also looks fake, like she's pretending to be happy. The Ella I knew never pretended. But it has to be her. â€Å"Dude, what are you doing?† Ethan complains as I snatch my phone off my bed. â€Å"I thought we were giving up for the day.† I tap the screen and call information. â€Å"Yeah, can I get a number for Ella Daniels in Las Vegas, Nevada.† I wait, worried she's not going to be listed. â€Å"She's been down in Vegas.† Ethan peers at the photo on the screen of Ella standing next to a girl with blonde hair and blue eyes in front of the UNLV campus. â€Å"She looks weird, but kinda hot. So is the girl she's with.† â€Å"Yeah, but she's not your type.† â€Å"Everyone's my type. Besides, she could be a stripper and that's definitely my type.† The operator comes back on and she gives me a few numbers listed, one of the numbers belongs to a girl living on the campus. I dial that number and walk out into the hall to get some privacy. It rings and rings and rings and then Ella's voice comes on the voicemail. She still sounds the same, only a little unemotional, like she's pretending to be happy, but can't quite get there. When it beeps, I take a deep breath and pour my heart out to the voicemail.
